"Welcome to The Summer Academy! We are so pleased that you are considering joining us for our exciting programme. We had been looking for the right boarding school taster course for our students for a long time but couldn’t find anything we thought was good enough for them. So we decided to set up the academy, bringing all of our educational experience, academic expertise, pastoral care and our network of outstanding teachers to create what we think is the best UK based course available. We hope you agree and look forward to meeting you at Sunningdale in July."
Olivia, Jim and Eleanor
My daughter is still talking about the camp and she's begging me to let her go back next year!
Olivia is the co-founder and director of British Tutors, a leading Hong Kong education and tuition company with a focus on teaching high level, academic English to its international students. A graduate of Christ Church College, Oxford University with a Masters degree in English Language and Literature, she has designed learning programmes, written curricula and taught English and arts subjects for the past ten years.
"With a background in the study and teaching of English, I see the enormous value of a broad arts education. Mastering the technicalities of the English language is one thing, but developing critical acumen, confidence in forming opinions and an understanding of the world in which we live through the study of literature is, I believe, vital for every young person. My hope is that every student at the academy leaves the course with a richer knowledge of English and the skills to continue the learning process at home."
Jim is the founder of Heritage Education, an educational consultancy that helps families find and gain access to the best independent day and boarding schools in the UK. He is also an ex prep school Senior Master and an expert in boarding school education. Jim spent 13 years working at Papplewick School in Ascot and is also a product of the independent schools sector himself, having been educated at Pinewood prep school (IAPS) and then Marlborough College (HMC).
"During my 13 years teaching in boarding schools I saw at first hand the merits of the system; the way that it fosters young people’s independence, self-confidence and ability to be motivated in many different areas, both academic and extra-curricular. My passion for this style of education and the belief in its benefits were the driving forces behind setting up The Summer Academy. We want students from all over the world to experience a taste of boarding education and benefit from the fantastic teaching and activity programme that is on offer at the academy."
Eleanor co-founded British Tutors with Olivia in 2008, their friendship dating back to their own years at boarding school together. She works as tutor, mentor and homeschooler for young students in Hong Kong and London, focusing on their personal development both inside and outside the classroom. A graduate of Edinburgh University, Eleanor holds a first class Masters degree in Psychology.
"In my decade of working with children I have found that the best education comes from experience, discussion and discovery. It should never be restricted solely to desk work or be seen as a chore by a child. As both a tutor and a mother, I strive to make learning a continuous and, above all, enjoyable process. So too at The Summer Academy we design our programmes to be both academically and personally enriching, whilst never forgetting the fun and adventure that a summer holiday deserves."
